Implanting a microchip is only the first step in providing microchip protection to pets. The second, most crucial step is registering microchipped pets in PetLink.net. Out of 400 microchipped pets, only 95 are registered by their owners after the initial implantation. Without registration, reuniting lost pets with their families is made more difficult and in the worst cases, impossible. PetLink is the industry leader for automated registrations. The PetLink team has found that shelters and rescues who use automatic registration help to reunite lost pets with their owners faster and more efficiently.
How can shelters start automating their registrations?

“We adopt out, reunite pets with their owners, and transfer approximately 4,100 pets per year. We need the benefit of having our software integrate with our PetLink Animal Professional account. It eases the burden of additional paperwork, and our employees can rest assured that all our adopted pets are properly enrolled in PetLink.” Director of Metro Nashville Animal Care and Control

A benefit of the PetLink automated registrations is helping vets, shelters, and rescues correct data entry errors. During registration uploads, we discover invalid chip numbers that have been entered into a pet’s record. Sometimes there are too few numbers, too many numbers, or transposed numbers which make the microchip number invalid. PetLink reported 37,614 invalid chip numbers in 2022, around 11% of all the microchips submitted via client integrations.
Automatic uploads catch these errors and notify the PetLink team. PetLink then sends ‘registration result’ emails to animal professionals after each data capture. These emails identify successful registrations, errors, pets that are already registered, and pets currently reported as lost, keeping your records as accurate as possible.
A scenario on why catching errors is Important:
Bella is implanted with a 15-digit microchip number, but someone accidentally records it as a 14-digit number. Later, if Bella is missing and found, a microchip scanner will reveal that her microchip number has 15 digits. If Bella’s records are searched with the 15-digit number that was scanned, her owner’s information will not be found because Bella’s record lists a 14-digit microchip number. In this case, Bella will not be reunited with her family.
When you integrate with PetLink, this scenario will not become a reality for your pet owners.
