I’ve come across several strays near our local elementary school and I always try to recover the dogs directly to their owners or turn them over to rescue. Recently, when my Pointer, Domino went missing, I had my first experience of how a chip can reunite pets and owners quickly. One of the greatest things about our happy reunion is this – we had a collar and tag on Domino but she must have snagged it and it was off. We were going to get her a new one that very morning and then she went missing only an hour later. All because of the chip she was recovered and identified. I am very happy that other people were considerate enough to take care of her and find out who she belonged to. I hate to find a dog without some form of ID like a chip or a tag. I have another dog, Smokey, who’s always escaping. I must have trained him to find the cutest girls in the neigborhood because it’s always a smiling cutie who knows him and brings him back to me! Both my dogs are rescued and we had them chipped for double protection, as back up. When Domino went missing we needed it for the first time. I’m just glad that the system worked. I always thought people were not used to chips being implanted in pets. It occurred to me some would not realize they could check for a chip when they picked up a stray pet. Or, when a dog is really cute like my Shih Tzu Smokey, some people might deliberately choose not to check for a chip but the dog could still be returned to its owner. I wish I could care for all the strays I find, but I already have two dogs and six cats. In fact, that’s the way I found Domino. Just like a baby abandoned on a hospital doorstep, she was left tied up inside a Petco supermart by someone who must have figured she was at least somewhere other pet lovers would find her.
